"Saints of Empowered Prayer: St. Teresa of Avila"
St. Teresa of
Avila: (1515-1582) St. Teresa was a contemplative nun,
religious reformer and foundress of the Discalced Carmelites which was the
reformed and more contemplative branch of the Carmelite order. She lived in
Spain and traveled extensively throughout the country founding new convents of
contemplative life, encountering much difficulty and illness. She once
complained that her life was like a "night in a bad inn." She was a spiritual
writer and gifted poet. She wrote Interior
Castle as a guide to explain to the nuns various kinds of prayer they might
experience on their journey to God. In all the difficulties she encountered, she
remained a woman "for God," a woman of prayer, discipline, and compassion. Her
ongoing conversion was a lifelong
struggle. In the midst of it all, she clung to God and
prayer. Her feast day is October 15th.
