"The Call # 8"
He Gave It All
The boy with
the five loaves and two fish (Please read John 6:1-15).
Jesus asked his disciples, "Where can
we buy enough food to feed all these people (5,000 men +)?" Andrew responded,
"There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But they will
certainly not be enough for all these people." (Lord, I believe but help me in
my disbelief.)
Five loaves and two fish--that is all
they had! It was all Jesus needed. A young boy who was following Jesus carried
the gift. Singer/songwriter, Ray Boltz, wrote a song,
"What If I Give All" The lyrics: "Mama, what if I give all I have? What will
that gift do?" "My child, a gift like that could change the world--could feed a
multitude!" (He was reminded of a nameless boy who gave to Jesus a gift of fish
and bread--I wonder if he said, "What if I give all I have, what
will that gift do?"
A gift like that did change the
world-- it did feed a multitude. Could the boy know what Jesus would do with
his offering? I think--probably not, but he must have had faith in Our Lord. He
had probably witnessed Jesus' miracles. He gave all that he had as so many have
in the past: St. Francis, St. Clare, St. Ignatius. They gave up their world
riches to follow Jesus. Give it all--you won't be sorry.
